The last of the unreached

August 21st, 2009

There are about 220 million Muslim peoples around the world with over 100,000 members each, and these peoples have no local committed Christian witness. In addition, there are no known believers who are specifically planning to take the Gospel to them. There are also huge numbers of Muslims where there is a small Christian witness, but the Muslims still have never heard the Gospel in a meaningful and culturally adapted way. This is true of millions of Arabs in the Middle East as well as millions more in Africa and Southeast Asia.

A list of  220 unreached Muslim people groups is available on the website: www.30-days.net.

Muslims Tell … “Why I chose Jesus

August 21st, 2009

Persecution abounds

After his conversion, one Lebanese Muslim lost all of his teaching and professional privileges and eventually was murdered. Other professionals, who had grown accustomed to some degree of esteem, are set back by the disdain they experience as a result of choosing to follow Christ. “Traumatizing” was how an observer described one Arab North African’s experience of being arrested, interrogated and held by police for two days.

For those who have been subject to persecution on the basis of their ethnicity, the persecution for their new-found faith comes as less of a surprise and actually serves to confirm their decision to leave their former faith. The North African who found Christians to be the only non-racist people he knew was intimately acquainted with severe persecution. His brother and several close friends have been murdered.

A West African man had his house burned and he was chased by people who were attempting to kill him and his family.

A fisherman from the Philippines expressed an increase in persecution, with people stealing his boat, cutting his nets and tormenting his children. Yet, an observer notes, “he is not shaken.”

Steadfast in the face of adversary

This steadfastness in the face of persecution illustrates, at least in part, the role that persecution has played. If it does not actually spur numerical growth, it certainly seems to spur the growth of the soul, creating, so to speak, bigger Christians as a result of difficult, even horrendous treatment by the majority Muslim community. In the face of persecution, the comfort of scripture has provided profound help in time of need. One Javanese brother found courage to face persecution in Matthew 5:11: “Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake.” The teaching of Christ reoriented his perspective and he began instead to consider it a blessing. He noted that it was the exposition of Matthew 5:11 at a church service that was instrumental in his coming to Christ.

An Egyptian believer received similar comfort from scripture when he was being spit on and suffering death threats. The taunters told his younger brother he was an infidel. Yet, when he read the Gospels, he felt the love of God, sensing the presence of Jesus. A contrast to the Qur’an, he found the Gospels powerful and satisfying.

God is at work

In this relatively brief look at what God is doing in a very large cross-section of humanity, we see His heart being conveyed in dramatic ways. Christ’s hand is extended to Muslims in a way no less sincere than His hand has been extended to you. We don’t appreciate being known for our worst manifestations. Muslims, too, ought to be given the benefit of the doubt. Many are seeking to follow God as best they understand Him. Sincerity may not be the measuring rod for truth, but sincerity of heart is a critical foundation for a life of saving faith in Christ.

Dreams and visions may have been used by God in part because there is a dearth of flesh-and-blood witnesses for Christ willing to articulate and demonstrate the power of the Gospel in person. If nothing else, the preceding testimonies of these witnesses for Christ show that God is at work. Apparently, when Muslims do have an opportunity to see the love of Christ revealed in all its fullness, they are finding a life with Christ quite compelling.

Short Term Missions – Middle East

There are some ministry opportunities we have available in the Middle East. We are looking for a few good men (and women) that are availabletea-and-dates for 2-3 months in order to spread the gospel in an Islamic country. This ministry is primarily building relationships with Arabs over tea with the hope of seeing them give their lives to Jesus. There are also opportunities to help with church administration and other ministries. The cost is reasonable, the work is spiritual, and the rewards are eternal.

Recently, we had a member of our church take us up on this offer. Soon, she’ll be leaving the comforts of Miami and will be serving in an undisclosed location in the Middle East, pray for her.

Would you like to follow up on the work that she’ll be doing? Email me at missions@calvarykendall.com

Yemeni Militants Kill Christian Aid Workers Over Missionary Work

July 1st, 2009

SANA’A/WOLFSBURG (Worthy News)– Christian aid workers are believed to have been kidnapped and killed in Yemen by suspected Islamic militants because they were involved in evangelism among Muslims and had been warned to end their mission work, BosNewsLife learned Thursday June 25.

The bodies of German nurses in training, Rita Stumpp, 26, and Anita Gruenwald, 24, and a 33-year-old South Korean woman, Eom Young-sun, were found by child shepards, four days after they were abducted June 12 with six other foreigners in the country’s troubled Noshour Valley region.Rita Stumpp, 26 (r) and Anita Gruenwald, 24, were killed in Yemen.

Yemen’s Information Ministry said it was hopeful that the other Christian hostages, including a British engineer, a German married couple and their three young children, were still alive.

German investigators have reportedly linked the kidnapping and killings by Islamic militants to Christian activities of the hostages, who had allegedly “been warned” not to be involved in mission work.

Yemen allows aid workers but it strictly forbids attempts to convert people to other religions in the country, where Islamic fundamentalists believe Christianity must be kept out of the Arabian peninsula.

WORLDWIDE SERVICES

The hostages supported Worldwide Services, a Netherlands-based Christian-leaning relief group that has been working at al-Jumhuri hospital in north-west city of Saada, for 30 years.

Worldwide Services has reportedly ties to a British evangelical organisation Worldwide Evangelization for Christ. Its Web site says its mission is to “reach out to people who have limited or no access to the good news of Jesus Christ, particularly where there is no church.” Worldwide services has been reluctant to discuss the situation with reporters.

“Anita and Rita will be remembered as people who loved God and all people,” said Matthias Rüther, the head of the German-based Brake Bible School where the two had been studying. The school said the nurses were in Yemen to learn more about Christian charity.

Their work was remembered earlier this week when some 2,000 mourners attended a memorial church service in the northern city of Wolfsburg. “What happened to them is beyond comprehension,” said local community leader Johann Dockter.

BAPTIST GROUP

Local sources reportedly said the hostages were also involved in a Baptist organisation that has a medical team in the hospital at Jebla, south of Sanaa, where an Islamist militant killed three American doctors in December 2002.

Yemeni authorities have blamed the abduction and murders on rebels from Yemen’s Zaidi Shiite minority, an accusation they have vehemently denied. However French News Agency AFP quoted an unidentified tribal source as saying that the six foreign hostages “were found alive and handed over to (rebel) commander Abdullah al-Rizani.”

They were believed to be in the Ruzmat area of Saada province, the centre of the Shiite rebellion in the mountains near the Saudi border.

Foreigners are often kidnapped in Yemen by tribesmen to be used as bargaining chips in disputes with the government, observers said. Over 200 foreigners have been abducted over the past 15 years, but this was the first in nearly a decade that a foreign hostage has died, observers said.

In June 2000, a Norwegian diplomat was killed in an gunfight between police and his a abductors and in December 1998, three Britons and an Australian seized by Islamist militants died when security forces stormed the kidnappers’ hideout.

In March of this year, four South Korean visitors to Yemen were killed in a suicide bombing at a historic tourist site that was claimed by Al-Qaeda. Seoul has urged its citizens to leave Yemen, adding to concerns among Christians that this will further impact mission works in the region, representatives told BosNewsLife.

"How Great is our God!!"

June 9th, 2006

Hello to my Calvary Chapel family!!!

Thank you for you for all your prayers!! We just love it here!!
Just to think that our trip will soon be over makes us sad. To wake up and see a beautiful blue sky without one cloud in it, it is truly a magnificent sight. Also, to see a nightsky filled with bright stars, moon, and city lights makes it all so special that I try to absorb it all to remember it.

These last few days have flown by so quickly that it is hard to believe that the weekend is here again. We have done so many different things and blessed so many people, not knowing that in return we were receiving the blessings from them!!

Everywhere we went, people have called out to us saying, “Welcome, welcome” even as we walked through the marketplace. The families that have invited us over have been teachers and people who have NOT received their monthly payments for over three months!! Yet these people offer you so many things to eat that you would think you were in a restaurant having a five to six course meal!! The minute you arrive, so do the cups and the three kinds of sodas. Next comes the coffee and the list goes on. Please pray that these people receive thier pay. Teachers that have not been paid continue to go to work on a daily basis. They say that they do it for the children.

We have learned some Arabic language and I want to share just one little phrase:
“Yasuua ma’aTHamaka” This means “Jesus, how GREAT YOU are”. It is part of a song that we learned and Heather and I seem to sing it or hum it regularly.

We got to meet an elderly lady at Calvary Chapel Jerusalem who is a Holocaust survivor. She was so small and cute. She had beautiful blue eyes and she reflected
so much LOVE in her. She kept on hugging me and I held on to her for a long time. That is about all that I could do because she only spoke Russian. I told her that I would take her home with me and she just had a glowing smile.

We also met other people of this land that touched our hearts. Meanwhile we had so much fun that we also acted as silly goofballs!!

Enjoy the pictures!!

Love,
Lucy

Hey everyone, it's Michi with another quick updat…

June 9th, 2006

Hey everyone, it’s Michi with another quick update! We would again like to apologize for the lack of posts, but as I said before, we’ve been really busy! But “il hum
dili luh” (praise God in Arabic) that all is going extremely well and we feel your prayers!

Over the past couple of days we’ve worked in the community center’s summer camp, did office work for the Musalaha ministry in Jerusalem, did more garden work and cleaning, visited another refugee camp, spent more time in prayer and fellowship, and in about an hour or so we will head out to an orphanage to do some activities with the kids.

Thanks again for all the prayers! We can’t wait to come back and share the deeper things that God has been doing in and through us! We love you!

PS: Mom, Dad, Tito, Meli, and Natie: I love and miss you guys SO much! Hugs and Kisses from the Holy Land!

Phone Conversation

June 5th, 2006

Hey everyone – this is Pat. I’m not in the Holy Land, but I wanted to let you all know that I just spoke on the phone with most of the team. They all sound absolutely GREAT! Most of their highlights so far have not been seeing all the wonderful sights, but meeting all the wonderful people – people that give everything when they have nothing.

Mission trips change your life; they improve your perspective and worldview. It’s awesome to see that happening in Pedro, Josh, Arlene, Michi, Maydi, Luci, and Heather.

Father, we pray for our friends and family that are on the other side of the globe serving you. Thank you for protecting them, using them, changing them. We continue to lift them up, Lord, because we know that they depend on prayer. We can serve with them as we pray. Bless them, fill them, and use them. Thank you, Jesus, for all that You do. Amen.
