Igreja Capela do Calvario; Word from the Pastor
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith:” 2 Timothy 4:7
As you know on July 27 we had a great lost, with Pastor Wellington’s death as he went to be with the Lord. Our brother finished well and was able to say the same words said by the apostle Paul about fighting the good fight. May Wellington’s example of faith encourage us to keep on fighting the good fight, keeping our eyes on Jesus the author and perfecter of our faith.

Highlights of the Month:
July proved to be another busy month as repairs inside the church continued to go forward, a giant yard sale in Xerem, a visit from the pastor who started the church here in Rio, visitors from Germany and a wedding of a couple from our church.
It’s gratifying to report that all the repairs, fixing-up, painting and installation of the audio equipment have been completed. We can now turn our full attention, resources and energies to outside our doors in taking the Gospel to the streets of Rio. Our prayers and hopes are to truly find ways to reach those unsaved people in our neighborhood as well as personally minister to the body of believers within our church.
We had a great visit from Pastor Jason Eisenweise and his son Colton. Pastor Jason started the Calvary Chapel Church here in Rio in 2001 and then unfortunately, due to Visa problems, was forced to leave Brazil in 2003. He is now the pastor at Calvary Chapel in Mobile, Al. Pastor Jason says he still has a special love and place in his heart for the people of Rio. We have been blessed several times over the years by his visits and continued prayers.
Sadly we had a tragedy hit our family of Calvary Chapels here in Brazil with the news of the untimely death of Pastor Wellington Silva de Oliveira of Recife. He was killed in a car accident when the cab he was riding in hydroplaned and crashed into a pole. His death reminds of how precious life is, the value of our eternal destiny and the importance of sharing Jesus’ love with others. Wellington led by example and was able to finish the race strong. Our prayers are with his family and the church body in Recife.
As in June we were able to celebrate yet another special marriage with a couple from within our church family. This time it was Cleber and Fabiana tying the knot. The wedding was held at the Calvary Chapel in Sao Vicente, where they were both originally from, with Pastors Celso and Alexandre performing the ceremony. And added bonus was that many of our church members were in attendance for this joyous occasion. We still have one more wedding planned for this year.
We also had two other guests visit us this month, Daniel and Damaris, a married couple from a Calvary Chapel church in Germany. They have been travelling in Brazil on a fact finding mission to see whether God is calling them to be missionaries in Brazil in two years. They also co-taught the Thursday night Bible study on the roles of men and women within the marriage.
The major highlight of the month was the fun-filled and successful yard sale we held in Xerem. The goal was to raise money to help support Euciene with her ministry to teach the children of the village. Donations of clothing, shoes, toys, and other things had been coming into the church over the past year.
It may have started a little slow but when word of the yard sale spread, we got swamped. Even with things marked at bargain basement prices we were still able to raise over 500 Reais to pay for the needed school supplies. The week before we had given the kids, who attend the school, special Calvary Chapel dinheiro which they could use to buy things. The kids took their purchasing power very seriously and were extremely thrifty with how they spent their money. The rest of the villagers had to use real currency to buy things.
July was a growth month both spiritually and in church members. We continue to be blessed.
PRAYER REQUESTS:
Please pray that even with the passing of Pastor Wellington that God will use this time to do great things through the church body in Recife and the rest of Brazil.
Pray that we will be ready with all the is needed for when the group from Edmonton, Canada arrive. Their plans are to travel to Brazil in November to start on the new construction of the four homes for the single moms and the project center in Xerem.
Keep praying that God will strengthened our church’s commitment and faithfulness to Him as we endeavor to reach out and share the Gospel to the people of Rio.
Finally, a special prayer as we are still hoping to raise financial support for Euciene in Xerem to help offset the cost of the school supplies while also providing her with a modest monthly income.
